معنى لفظ الشهيد لا يختلف كثيرًا بين العربية والإنجليزية، ولكن اللفظ المصاحب لها (collocations) يختلف كثيرًا، ففي الإنجليزية يقال على الجنود الذين سقطوا في ميدان المعركة Fallen martyr (fallen soldier)، أما في العربية فيقال "نال الشهادة"، للتعبير عن انه انتصار يكسبه الإنسان، أو يقال "ارتقى شهيدًا"، للتعبير عن أن الشهيد صعد إلى السماوات العلى، وأنه أيضًا صار أعلى مكانة مما كان عليه وهو حي.

In English, the expression for dying for a religious belief is "martyred", or "a fallen martyr" (akin to "fallen soldier"). In Arabic, however, the expression is "to win martyrdom" or "to ascend as a martyr", which denotes that being a martyr uplifts a person into a higher status as well as a higher plane of existence.
