في المشهد الختامي لرواية "رجال في الشمس" لغسان كنفاني، يجد الفلسطينيون الذين يحاولون الهرب عبر الحدود العراقية - الكويتية أنفسهم في خزان مغلق تحت شمس حارقة، وبسبب تعطل السائق عند إحدى نقاط التفتيش، تزداد حرارة الخزان شيئًا فشيئًا حتى يموت جميع من فيه.

هذا التساؤل من المهرّب، الذي يعد من أشهر العبارات في الأدب الفلسطيني، ظاهره تساؤل عن سبب رفض هؤلاء المحبوسين أن يحتجوا على موتهم ولو بصرخة، وباطنه إيماءة من كنفاني إلى المعضلة التي يواجهها الفلسطينيون. العالم يقول لهم ألا يرفعوا صوتهم وهم يقتلون، ويزعجه إباؤهم وعزتهم وهم يحاربون عزّلا أمام جيش مدجج بالسلاح. صمود فلسطينيي اليوم أمام الاعتقال والتشويه والقمع والقتل هو ما كان راوي غسان يسأل عنه منذ عقود.. أن تظل الروح نابضة بالمقاومة.

اغتيل غسان كنفاني وهو في السادسة والثلاثين بمؤامرة إسرائيلية، ولا يزال صدى سؤاله يتردد في أرجاء الأراضي المحتلة.

In “Men in the Sun” by legendary Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani (assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in 1972), three men try to cross the desert into Kuwait in search for job opportunities. In what is probably one of the most famous scene in Palestinian fiction, they hide inside a large, empty water tank in the stifling heat of the desert. After going through the last border checkpoint, the driver opens the tank only to find their dead bodies. The story concludes with this desperate cry of the driver: Why didn’t you knock on the sides of the tank? Why didn't you bang on the sides of the tank? Why? Why? Why? These famous lines by Kanfani represent his resistance philosophy which calls on the Palestinian people to never surrender.. to resist and fight for their freedom and dignity. It’s a reminder that the fate of the Palestinian people will be like the tragic end of the three Palestinian refugees who have died suffocated in the tank, if they don’t rise up to fight their oppressors.

Palestinians are faced with two options: Either resistance or surrender. As we witness every day, their choice is resistance despite Israeli aggression and disproportionate use of force and the betrayal of the international community.
